April 2014 was an epic month for comic books with new number ones and continuing story lines. Marvel Comics' Amazing Spider-Man #1 was the comic industry's best-selling comic book in both units and dollars in over a decade and was one of four titles placed by Marvel in the top ten. DC Comics took the remaining six spots in the top ten, led by Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo's Batman #30 in the third spot.
The sci-fi comedy crime caper Sex Criminals by Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky from Image Comics was April's best-selling graphic novel and was one of the publisher's seven titles among the month's top ten. Also of note, Marvel Comics' Amazing Spider-Man: Family Business original graphic novel ranked in the fifth spot, and DC Comics' The Joker: Death of the Family ranked in the seventh spot.
Boom Comics gave fans new releases with Dead Letters # 1; waking up in a fleabag motel with bandaged arms and a revolver on his desk, Sam doesn’t remember a thing - not how he got here, where here is, or who he is. But the armed men knocking on his door do and Sam will have to use every trick from his forgotten repertoire to outrun and outsmart his way through a hardboiled wonderland of gang wars, femme fatales and big secrets. Herobear and The Kid: Saving Time #1; Henry, the family’s magical butler, is missing. It’s up to Tyler and Herobear to figure out what happened to their friend only they might learn a lot more about Henry than they initially thought and be forced to get help from an unsuspected source.
Valiant Comics also gave readers an all-new mini-series, Shadowman: End Times #1; the end times are now. Master storyteller Peter Milligan is pushing Shadowman to the edge, but can Jack Boniface survive the plunge?
Dark Horse Comics released an All-New Conan The Avenger #1; Conan goes on a wild hunt and a supernatural adventure. Red 5 and Image Comics released a few #1’s as well; Bad Dreams # 1, from Red 5 and Dream Police from Image.
