So far, Marvel Comics has unleashed four Star Wars titles and all four titles are set to hit the graphic novel format in the fall. Star Wars titles have always done fairly well; under the Dark Horse Imprint Star Wars did okay, but under the Marvel Comics Imprint, Star Wars has broken records selling a million copies of issue #1.
Marvels version of Star Wars has fans on the edge of their seats, eagerly waiting for next months release. Is it the Marvel insignia that is making Star Wars Comics sell out monthly or is it the anticipation of the brand new movie Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens, set to be released on December 18th that has comic book fans lining up for the next issue? It is actually both; Marvel Comics has been working closely with its sister company Lucasfilm to coordinate the comic storylines with the storylines of the movie.
Marvel’s new Star Wars #1 has exceeded a million copies sold on the direct market, making it the top-selling comic of the past 21 years. This new ongoing series appeals to the audience that loves the original three films and just wants to spend more time in that world with those characters, and the creative team delivers a first issue that feels like classic Star Wars from beginning to end.
Writer Jason Aaron does remarkable work capturing the voices of the Star Wars characters; He has an exceptional handle on Han Solo’s charming rogue personality, Leia is compassionate but fierce, Luke is headstrong and naive, and C-3PO is overly chatty and slightly aloof. Darth Vader does not say much, but he speaks volumes with his actions, Vader shows his ruthlessness by sacrificing Storm troopers to shield himself from Chewbacca’s assassination attempt before unleashing the power of the Force on the Wookiee shooter.
John Cassaday’s artwork captures the look of our Star Wars characters with uncanny likenesses to the actors. Han, Luke, and Leia consistently look like Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, and Carrie Fisher. Cassaday’s attention to detail and smooth line work brings the characters and their environments to life.
