In print for over forty years, Uncanny X-Men comic books are one of the longest running titles from Marvel Comics. The title was created by the legendary Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. Originally written under The X-Men title, Uncanny X-men comic books grew into one of the most popular comic book series and spawned numerous spin-off X’ related comic books.
Uncanny X-men was launched in 1963, starring five of the original X-Men Angel, Beast, Cyclops, Iceman, Marvel Girl and their teacher Professor X. Uncanny also had Professor X’s nemeses, Magneto. Comic book legends Stan Lee and Jack Kirby kept the title going for seven years and included several specials and crossovers.
The Uncanny X-Men was officially (permanently) named Uncanny in comic book issue #142, which also was the comics relaunch under, Chris Claremont. While Uncanny X-Men had many creative influences, the one that brought the comic book title to life was Chris Claremont. Claremont took Uncanny X-Men through several historical changes that resulted in a group of mutants that the world would hate and fear at the same time. The second run ran an impressive fifteen years and was one of Marvel Comics Top Ten in the 1970’s.
After Claremont's run, the X-Men were divided into two color-coded squads, the X-Men or the blue colored team and The Uncanny X-Men, aka the gold team. Scott Lobdell, was fully credited as writer, in the third run of Uncanny X-Men starting with comic book issue #289. Uncanny X-Men’s third run, lasted till 2011 and had several different writers and artists.
Volume two of the Uncanny X-men comic book run relaunched after the events in the X-Men: Schism miniseries, where half the X-Men, led by Wolverine, returned to New York, to found a new school. The new volume of Uncanny X-Men featured the Extinction Team, and contained members of the X-Men that had remained with Cyclops to deal with potential threats to the mutant race's survival. . Volume two ended with Cyclops, in prison for his actions during this event.
Uncanny X-Men comic books were relaunched a third time with Volume three, which was part of Marvel Now!. Lasting two years, this series featured Cyclops and the remnants of his Extinction Team after the events of the first All-New X-Men story arc.
Volume four relaunched as part of the All-New, All-Different Marvel, and is being written by Cullen Bunn with art by Greg Land. The Uncanny X-Men team will feature Magneto leading Psylocke, Archangel, M, Mystique, Fantomex and Sabretooth while a different team will be led by Storm and be called the Extraordinary X-Men. Cyclops fate after Battleworld is still unknown. The series will deal with threats that arise as a result of a new, more dangerous world post-Secret Wars.
