With the popularity for creator-owned comics growing Marvel Comics did not want to be left in the dust, so to speak, which led to the creation of their own imprint for writers and illustrators, Icon Comics. Formed in 2004, Marvels new creator-owned imprint, Icon quickly released two titles, moving from Image Comics were Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming’s superhero detective series Powers and David Mack’s Kabuki.
In 2005 Icon Comics published its third title Dream Police, a futuristic detecive story by popular writer J. Michael Straczynski. Straczynski also released Icon Comics next title, The Book of Lost Souls, a supernatural mystery set in the 21st century.
2006 brought hit writers Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips aboard Icon Comics, publishing modern noir Criminal. The team of Brubaker and Phillips were such a great hit together that they brought fans a similar title to Dream Police, but with a superhero twist, Incognito.
In 2008 Icon Comics published the mega-hit Kick-Ass from Mark Millar and John Romita, Jr. Kick-Ass's popularity led to a movie adaptation in 2010, which was followed by a second Kick-Ass 2 in 2013. Kick-Ass 2 was a such a highly anticipated movie led it to become the highest pirated movie in history.
Writer Matt Fraction and artists Gabriel Bá and Fábio Moon joined Icon Comics, bringing their highly sought after title, Casanova. Cassanova started with reprints under Icon and continued into a second volume.
