In 1994, major publishing company, Marvel Comics acquired the publishing rights to Disney Comics following their closure. But then, oddly enough in December of 2009 Disney Entertainment acquired Marvel Entertainment (the parent company of Marvel Comics), bringing back their licensed characters and many more. This arrangement has worked out well for both companies, because it allows Disney to make future movies and television shows starring the new characters from Marvel, along with the comic books, raising their popularity to new, unexpected heights.
Disney focused their children's line of comic books on reprints of Pixar and Muppet comics that had been originally published by Dark Horse Comics and Boom! Studios instead of popular titles like Walt Disney's Comics and Stories, Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, and Uncle Scrooge. They also put a lot of focus on Disney Kingdoms, a line of original titles based on Disney's theme park attractions.
Walt Disney's Comics and Stories, Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, and Uncle Scrooge comic books are still published, but under IDW’s imprint when Disney decided to hand over the rights to the popular characters. While the comic licenses for the Disney animated features (notably including Big Hero 6 comic book, which itself was based on a Marvel comic) and television shows moved to Joe Books.
Disney Comics next big adventure came in 2012 with the acquisition of the Star Wars franchise. The Star Wars comic books have done very well for the company, spurring numerous spin-off comic book stories starring the major characters in their own series or mini-series.
