Wolverine, one of Marvel Comics’ most popular mutant heroes, has been in existence since his introduction in the 1970’s. Born in Canada in the late 1800’s Wolverine or Logan, his chosen nom de guerre, was born the illegitimate son of the wealthy Elizabeth Howlett and her grounds-keeper Thomas Logan. Logan was neglected by his mother, who could not get over the death of her first son, and was constantly under his grandfather’s control, who believed that Logan needed a strong hand and disciplined him accordingly, which was quite severe and often. His grandfather often said, “Firm, but fair” to justify his abusive actions against Wolverine.
Wolverine spent most of his childhood playing on the estate grounds with friends Rose and Dog, Wolverines half-brother. Dog who was also subject to an abusive childhood, made unwanted advances towards Rose as they reached their teenage years, in his warped mind, from the years of abuse he thought he was in love with Rose. Wolverine reported these advance to his father, and in retaliation Thomas, Dogs father, killed Wolverines puppy leading to the expulsion of both Thomas and Dog.
The duo returned sometime later, armed with a shot-gun in a drunken stupor. Thomas’s goal was to retrieve his former lover Elizabeth, but John Sr. intervened and Thomas shot him in the head in cold-blood just as Wolverine entered the room. Upon the sight of his murdered father, Wolverine snapped and his mutation surfaced finally; bone claws extended from the backs of his hands and he attacked the intruders with uncharacteristic ferocity, killing Thomas and scarring Dog's face with three claw marks. Already an emotionally disturbed woman since the death of her first son, Elizabeth, became completely unhinged, drove Wolverine away and took her life, immediately afterward, with a Thomas' gun.
Dog falsely reported to the police that it was Wolverine and Rose that took the gun and murdered everyone. Wolverine and Rose were forced to flee. Taking refuge in a British Columbia stone quarry, under the guise of being cousins Wolverine took on the name Logan, in order to hide his identity. This environment and hard work led to provoked traumatic changes in his body, Logan grew to be unusually healthy and ferocious, displaying enhanced agility and strength, possessing animal-like heightened senses that rivaled any animal's and learning to break the rocks by hating and bullying them.
Logan soon became a favorite of the foreman Smitty. Smitty became a surrogate father to Logan, which highly upset his former favorite Cookie. Cookie took an instant dislike to Logan and continually hurt him, until Smitty came to his rescue. Cookie even shortened the fuse to an explosive of Logan's, killing five men. Cookie also cut Logan and Rose's rations, so Logan hunted deer in the woods and gave the extra to the neighbors, which made him more loved. Logan was immune to the elements, due to his healing factor, and even ran with the wolves in the forest, learning to hunt like an animal. Logan also defeated Cookie in a cage match; this is where he earned the nickname "the Wolverine".
Mr. Howlett Wolverine’s grandfather was in failing health and asked Dog to find his grandson, so he could make peace with him before he died. Dog agreed; however, Dog (who had become a physically formidable man himself) had ulterior motives to track down Wolverine, he wanted him dead. Dog finally catches up with Wolverine and reminds him of his past and a fight ensues. Wolverine soon gains the upper hand and for the first time in public unsheathes his claws. As he was about to deal the final blow, Rose jumps in and is accidently impaled on Wolverines claws. Horrified Wolverine flees to the woods where he lives with wolves in self-inflicted exile.
Since then Wolverine has experienced many adventures, wars, lovers, friends and foes. The stories in these comic books tell the tales of Wolverine and his experiences. Pick up a copy of Wolverine today at White Dragon Comics and experience an exciting and adventurous comic story like no other.
