Marvel Comics presents fans with an all-new Avengers comic book series, The New Avengers; a spin-off of the long-running The Avengers. The title has been used for three different series. The first two were written by Brian Michael Bendis nd depicted a version of Marvel's premiere superhero team, the Avengers. The third is written by Jonathan Hickman and depicts a group of characters called the Illuminati, formerly introduced in New Avengers Vol. 1 #7 in 2005.

The Illuminati are a group of superhereos that secertly joined forces and work behind the scenes in Marvel Comics main shared universe. The Illuminati were established in their first published appearance in New Avengers #7, their history was discussed in the special New Avengers: Illuminati. The group was revealed to have been formed very shortly after the Kree-Skrull War, which was depicted in Avengers #89–97.

Each member of the Illuminati represents a different aspect of society and point of view, which is part of the reason they formed. Each member is also considered to be an unparalleled master of their domain or area of expertise. First is Namor, ruler of the oceans, Tony Stark aka Iron Man represents the common man, Reed Richards is the science-based part of the team, Black Bolt represents the Inhumans, Doctor Strange for the mystical/non-scientific, Captain America the first true super soldier and Professor Charles Xavier on behalf of the mutant community, and was replaced by Beast upon his death. These men worked together for an unspecified amount of time to mold and shape the status of the superhuman world and the world around it.

The group forms in the aftermath of the Kree-Skrull War. Iron Man realizes that each of  members have known about these alien races beforehand, and had they worked together as a group, they would have been able to stop it. He brings together the Illuminati with the Black Panther in Wakanda, and proposes that they form a government of superhumans. Namor refuses, believing that there are too many superheroes that are violent outsiders. Xavier refuses because he thinks that mutants are already feared and hated, and it will only lead tp more hatred of mutants and expand to the superheroes as well. Doctor Strange refuses stating that too many heroes are anti-establishment and that the group Iron Man has assembled would not be anti-establishment, but rather a form of counter-establishment. The group does, however, agree to meet to exchange information on a regular basis. The only one to refuse to meet or even participate with the others is the Black Panther, fearing the association will end in less than magnanimous actions.

The Illuminati currently appear in Jonathan Hickman's New Avengers and are dealing with colliding universes that could lead to the end of everything. The current members are Tony Stark, Reed Richards, Dr. Strange, Black Bolt, Beast, T'challa and Namor.
